The GT Summer Series is approaching the final round of its inaugural season. It is time to look back with the people behind the championship and take a look at what the future holds.
The GT Summer Series brings together amateurs, newcomers and experienced racers. Innovations such as performance equalisation, Heroes Arena and Fan Cam offer much more than other racing series. In this interview, we look back and ahead.
Stefan Lehner (Head of Race Series at GEDLICH Racing), the GT Summer Series is approaching its grand finale in 2026. How has the first season gone?
SL: We are happy on several levels. We managed to establish a solid, sizeable and stable grid right from the start. The mix is exactly what we had hoped for, with amateur drivers taking centre stage. Our cooperation with the ADAC and the event organisers is running smoothly, and that has a positive impact on operations throughout the race weekend. We have also been able to implement many of the organisational advantages we brought over from the Winter Series during the summer season.
Jann Jöge (Sales at GEDLICH Racing), you and your colleagues in the sales team are responsible for the quantity and quality of the driver and car grid. How satisfied are you?
JJ: Very satisfied. What makes me particularly happy is that so many amateur drivers have placed their trust in us and committed to the entire inaugural season. The level of driving has exceeded our expectations, and the drivers and teams have been excellent at working with our Race Control and Driver’s Mentor Frank Biela. We are already selling entries for next season and are receiving very, very positive signals. We expect a significantly larger grid and even more teams in 2027. Many drivers have recognised the advantages of the GTSS from the outside and are now turning their attention towards our series.
Markus Gedlich (Managing Director at GEDLICH Racing and also responsible for marketing), you introduced a number of innovations to the GT Summer Series right from the beginning. What are your plans for the future?
MG: With Heroes Arena, Fan Cam and performance equalisation, we have brought innovations to German motorsport that did not previously exist in this form. We celebrate our amateur drivers and do everything we can to put them at the heart of the GTSS. I am happy that we have succeeded in doing so to a large extent, even though it is not always easy. When you integrate into an existing event package, coordinating every detail is naturally not always straightforward, but we have managed that very well. We will continue along exactly the same lines in 2027. There will also be some adjustments, for example to the livestream. We currently broadcast in two languages. In the future, greater emphasis will be placed on German-language broadcasting.
Stefan, what adjustments to the regulations and race weekend format can we expect for the 2027 season?
SL: The foundation we established during this inaugural season is fundamentally working very well. Above all, we want to focus on fine-tuning the details. Equal opportunities and smooth operations will always be our priorities. We are currently collecting feedback and suggestions from teams and drivers and will begin incorporating the changes immediately after the season. Customer satisfaction and the needs of amateur drivers will always remain at the centre of our approach. Personally, I would like every driver and every team to be able to say at the end of the 2027 season that all the details requiring optimisation have been fully considered and implemented. That is only possible through a strong connection with our customers. They actively help shape the future of the GTSS.
We are also working towards having a total of six events on the calendar in 2027.
Robin Selbach (Managing Director and Head of Sales at GEDLICH Racing), that is interesting. Are you also taking into account the fact that there will be major changes in other racing series whose target audiences partly overlap with yours?
RS: Our approach is always driven by demand. We welcome every driver who is interested in the GTSS. We expect above-average growth in Porsche Cup and GT4 entries in 2027 and are currently discussing internally how we can respond to that with appropriate adjustments.
In general, we are seeing very stable demand for GT3, Cup and Challenge cars. That is one of the defining characteristics of the GTSS. I am confident that we will have even more of these high-performance sports cars on the grid in 2027.
Stefan, what is your motto for the future of the GT Summer Series?
SL: Together with our drivers and teams, we are shaping the future of the GTSS!
